Litter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Distance: 9.5 miles
Song of the Run: Dirty Little Secret - All-American Rejects

Weather: 34 degrees

Run Notes:
Wore my high tech running tights today and I have to say they are pretty wonderful things.  Think swim suit technology meets running needs.  It keeps your knees and legs in proper form and a general feeling of support to the rest of your lower half.  My legs did not feel tired after a long run. Cool and techie!

Muse of the Day:
Ran by the Regional Water guys out picking up garbage from the side of the road and it made me very sad that people don't care enough about the environment they live in.  Do they not care about dirtying up the place where they live?  I don't think most animals do that yet here we are supposedly the most evolved animal on earth and we foul up our living areas.  We should not have to have someone who picks up litter just because people are too careless, or should I say uncaring, about dumping whatever out their car window.

So wrong on so many counts.

Contractor Maddness

Distance: 11 miles
Song of the Run: Dragostea din - O-Zone
Weather: a balmy 51 degrees

Run Notes:
It is always a good day when you see the wild turkeys.  Two of them wandered across my path this morning and it made me smile.  I think of them as my lucky charms.  Granted they are pretty ugly lucky charms but I have good karma with them.  Last year I herded three of them out of the road (they are not the most intelligent of birds).  A mile or two later I hesitated crossing a very busy street, which turned out to be fortuitous since a car ran the red.  I figured it was the gods looking out for me for keeping the turkeys safe from harm.  Not more than a half mile later three more turkeys crossed my path.  I thanked them for keeping me safe and acknowledged that we had just paid it forward for one another.  Since then I have kept an eye out for them and am always pleased to see them.

Muse of the Day:
I have workers replacing my chimney today.  I like getting work done to my house but always feel I am playing mom to a bunch of kids.  Is it just the nature of the guys who do this kind of work or have I not found the right contractors?

Here is my case:
1. They told me they would be here bright and early yesterday at 7AM.  I cut my run short to accommodate their schedule but they did not arrive until 1PM.  There was no call to explain the delay or to say when they might actually arrive.  Then they left at 3PM.
2. I was told they would finish the job Wednesday morning not Tuesday as originally discussed.  I had already told them they could not come Wednesday morning since I have house guest who are arriving in the wee hours of the morning that day.
3. They stored tools and supplies in our garage, not a big deal.  They arrived this morning promptly at 7AM which was good because my husband leaves at 7:15 and I was going for a run.  We told them to take everything out of the garage so we wouldn't have to leave it open since none of us were going to be home.  When I got back from my run, the guy was sitting in the driveway because he had forgotten to get the quickrete out of the garage.
4. He has rung the bell to open the garage one more time.

When I contract work on my home I feel that I am the employer.  Therefore, I should have some say about the hours worked and the contractor should be responsible to insure they have all the materials needed available, but not at my inconvenience.  I do not want to feel I need to be on hand for them all day to make sure they have the stuff they need.  It makes me feel more like a babysitter than an employer.

We'll wait to see how the rest of the day plays out and how many more times they ring the doorbell.  So more of a rant than a muse today.  I apologize.

Tricks or Treats

Distance: 5 miles
Song of the Run: Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode

Weather: 46 degrees

Run Notes:
A cool crisp day.  I felt I could run forever but forced myself to limit it to a five mile weight day to stay on schedule for the week.  I hate having to be so scheduled but my family's commitments sometimes have to be taken into consideration.

Daily Muse:
I ate too many Halloween treats, perhaps that is why I wanted to run so far this morning.  My daughter had a party so the night was filled with little trick or treaters coming up to the door and teenagers slamming down pizza watching "Shaun of the Dead."

The kids did go out to a haunted house and hit up the neighborhood for a  bit of trick or treating.  I felt I should have discouraged this as they are getting too old, but at the same time I was glad they didn't feel so jaded and still wanted to play Halloween make believe. When they came back the house the sat around, opened their candy bags and traded out their favorite pieces.  They sounded like little kids.  Sometime you need reminders that teenagers are indeed still children, even though they would never want you to consider them kids.  All too often, the media depicts teenagers (think Gossip Girl), and we tend to treat them in  a more adult manner then they are and expect them to deal with adult issue for which they are not always equipped.

So it's okay for teens to step back and enjoy this time in their life.  It is not an easy time.  I know I would never go back to being in high school for anything. However, they do have so many things going for them and there is a lot of fun to be had.  I am just glad with all the pressures they have on them, they can still enjoy simple things like trick or treating.

Halloween Meets Steampunk

Distance: 7.5 miles
Song of the Run: The Munsters Opening Credits Song

Weather: 48 degrees and breezy

Run Notes:
A tired run this morning.  I felt like quitting about 4 miles into it but felt I had to stick with it to work off the Halloween peanut M&Ms I ate while carving up pumpkins last night.  Glad I stuck with it though, it turned out to be a beautiful morning after yesterdays storm.  The sun, when it came out, lit up the yellow, red and orange leaves.  It will be sad when the leaves are gone.  It made me think of butterflies and I realized how much the leaves are like them. They are so vibrant for just a few days before they fade and drop to the ground. You need to enjoy them while they are in their glory.

Muse of the Day:
Halloween is just a few days away, hence the song in my head this morning.  I am going to spend the day making a costume for my 16-year old daughter.  Remember? Last week I was protesting the sexy costumes selling in the stores.  Well, since she didn't want one of those (and neither did I) we went to the fabric store to get something to make her into a dinosaur.

As we trolled Joanne Fabric she changed her mind and decided to be a conservative Steampunk.  Steampunk for those who have no idea, and I didn't until recently, is "sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s."  I think of it as the Wild Wild West meets a Victorian punk with a sci-fi edge. So we got material for a waistcoat which is what I will sew up today, and she will use different elements from her wardrobe for the rest of it.

I went back to the store yesterday to get lining fabric and ran into another mom and daughter figuring out fabric for a genie costume.  The daughter was 20-years old.  I told the mom I was relieved to know I'd still be making costumes for some years to come. I will be very sad when the day comes when she no longer needs me to help her in these ways.  Silly, but it keeps us close and I cherish the time I have left as I know she will be leaving for college in a year and a half.

I love Halloween, we get into it in a pretty big way. We have a party for my daughter and her friends.  They hand out candy, go to the haunted house around the corner, eat a lot of junk, and watch scary movies..it is been a fun transition from ticks or treats to a more grown up celebration.

We were merely freshmen

Distance: 12 miles
Song of the Run: The Freshman - Verve Pipe

Weather: 40's with rain looming

Run Notes:
I didn't mean to run so far today but I needed to work out some demons.  That is the beauty of running, it can take you out of yourself.

Muse of the Run:
I am sure who ever invented the leaf blower probably never intended it to be used by the every day suburban.  On this somewhat blustery day I passed two individuals blowing their leaves out into the street. It seems so pointless to blow them into the street and not pick them up.  Especially on a day when you know they will just blow back into the same area.  i wanted to go up to these people and say, "really? Exactly what are you trying to accomplish with this pointless endeavor?"

What a complete waste of energy and a burden on the environment!  Doesn't anyone remember what a rake is for and the effectiveness of a little elbow grease?

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Distance: 8 miles
Song of the Run: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper

Weather: 44 degrees

Run Notes:
Warmer today, with some sun that quickly disappeared before I finished the seventh mile.  Ran some trails today.  On one trail, which I thought would lead me over to a road, I was confronted a dog.  I am not afraid of dogs and this one didn't seem particularly aggressive, however, it kept barking at me.  I came toward it and told it to go home.  It kept moving forward and even though I was ready to go the other direction I didn't want to turn my back on it.  Its owner finally got it back into its yard and I was able to go on.  Guess I don't need to go back that way again.

Muse of the day:
I went to the Halloween superstore yesterday to look for some costume elements for my daughter and was shocked.  Under the guise of "Halloween Costumes" I found the undermining of feminism.  Every costume was sexed up.  From cowboy to super hero, to fairies.  And in the middle of it all were teenage girls picking out these slutty-looking costumes.

I guess more than being shocked I had to ask WHY?  Why has Halloween, the celebration of mischief , tricks, candy, ghouls and ghosts, become the evening where women dress smutty.  Do I sound puritanical, because I'm definitely not.  It is just the fact that we are teaching girls that in order to have a good time you have to dress provocatively.

No wonder teenage pregnancies and STDs are on the rise.  So much for eight years of Bush conservatism.

Can't girls have fun without feeling they have to look trampy?  Isn't that really what Cyndi was singing about?

Taking it Easy

Distance: 4 miles
Song of the Run: Pretty Fly (for a white guy) - The Offspring
Weather: 53 degrees

Run Notes;
A weight day so I took it pretty easy today.

Brisk but bright
moving along slowly
The sun is golden on the water lilies.

Have a great day y'all!

Autumn is here and it's snowing!

Distance: 7.5 miles
Song of the Run: Auga de Rosas - Lila Downs

Weather: 34 degrees

Run Notes:
So after experiencing some creaky knees from the half marathon I decided to take a few days off.  I was going to run yesterday but the weather prevailed with rain, wind, and snow.  It felt good to be out this morning, although it was a bit chilly.  I like running when it is cold, provided I am dressed for it, besides it was beautiful out.   To top off the morning, as I was running by the supply ponds some of the younger swans were working out their wings flying around low to the water.  Did you know that when swans fly their wings make an incredible swooshing sound?  It's fantastic!  I just had to stop just to watch and listen.  I know I can make it through the day now.

Autumnal Snow

Yesterday, I went leaf peeping with my family.  The three of us in a car for 2-3 hours and we survived.  At first it was stressful and full of questions:  where are we going exactly, where should we buy gas, and why did my 16-year old not complete her homework the day before? Once those questions were answered and my daughter finished rolling her eyes at us, I think we had a good time.  Although it was raining we saw some beautiful leaves, discovered a restaurant what we want to visit in the near future, and even gave the girl a chance to practice her driving skills (scary!).

We stopped for lunch and while we were inside the cafe it started to snow.  Big, fat, fluffy snowflakes!  I have to say we were all giddy with the excitement of it. It was coming down in such big flakes you could see them falling out of the sky and zooming towards the car.  It looked like slow-motion warp speed.  (An oxymoronic sentence if there ever was one)  It was hard to keep your eyes on the road and not become mesmerized it.

Snow and it is not even Halloween yet!  This makes you wonder what the winter is going to be like. It may be time to finally break down and get a snow blower!

When we got home I made the first pumpkin pie of the season.  Let the fall begin!!!

Half Marathon Results

Distance:13.1 Miles

Song of the Run:  So What - Pink
Weather: Cool

Run Notes:
The morning dawned into a beautiful day.  A little chilly as we left and made our way to Hartford but warmed up enough for a sleeveless singlet to run the race.  As a matter of fact, the first few miles were almost hot and muggy.

I had never run the ING Hartford Marathon / Half Marathon and was not sure what to expect.  It turned out to be a great race.  I liked the course which took you through the city and down along the riverfront park.  There was a lot of support by volunteers and you felt that if at any time you needed assistance someone was close by.  Lots of water stops, however not a lot of potty stations.  My family especially liked the course since it looped out and back through the downtown area so it was easy for them to cheer me on from different locations along the course.

My fears about not being able to finish the race were unfounded.  I was able to finish although I did hit a wall around mile 10.  This seemed strange to me since I easily run 10+ miles each week.  I was glad when the gu kicked in.  What really got me through was mental calisthenics.  I concentrated on the song of the run, which is about kicking ass, and tried to stay on breath.  It worked but I have to admit I was tired by the end and glad it was over.  The post race food was great thanks to Whole Foods and the beer was one of my husband's favorites.

I took Sunday off and perhaps that was a mistake.  I woke up with sore knees which have persisted so far this week.  This is unsettling to me since I feel I trained for the race and up to this point have not had any problems.  So I am taking it easy this week with short runs.  I may not have many run options this weekend as it is supposed to be rainy with some sleet and flurries.  Yup that's right folks flurries - in October.  I think I need to stock up on warm running gear.

Next Stop - Half Marathon

Distance: 7.2 Miles
Song of the Run: Shattered (Turn the Car Around) - O.A.R.

Weather: 52  degrees, breezy

Run Notes:
What a beautiful autumn day!  Mild and cool with light breeze.  The most fantastic thing about this morning was the quality of the light.  I may have mentioned before how golden the light becomes during fall.

So this is my last run before the half marathon on Saturday.  I am nervous  about the run, for reasons I do not  fully  understand.  I know I have  trained for it and am ready for it  physically but I just can't seem to get my head in the game.  I drove the course, or what I could of it, yesterday and it looks relatively flat and fast.  Perhaps it is just the word marathon that is stopping me.  I have run a marathon before and I remember the last few miles as difficult.  I was tired and wanted nothing more than to stop.  This is different though.  My body is okay with it, I just need to wrap my head around it.

Wish me luck!

Distance: 4 miles
Weather: 62 degrees, a beautiful fall day!

Run Notes:
It was so hard to make myself get out for my run today.  I am just tired.  My husband worked late last night so I stayed up to wait for him and did not get to bed until 1AM.  Then got up this morning at 6:30A.  However, I was rewarded for my efforts.  As I passed the supply ponds I came across a mature swan and its signet.  The signet is full grown but has not changed colors as yet.  Quite lovely!

I ran 8 miles yesterday and plan another longish run tomorrow and then a short one on Thursday.  I will take Friday off to prepare for the half marathon on Saturday.  I am a bit worried about the upcoming race.  I am confident I can do the distance but not so sure about how I will feel at the finish line.  I guess that is a good comparison for life.  You really don't ever know how the race will end.

Singing Styles

Distance: 4 miles
Song of the Run: Love Story - Taylor Swift

Weather: 55 degrees, sunny

Run Notes:
A nice short run to work out the legs after the long run yesterday and much warmer!

Singing Styles

Mariah Carey is hitting the morning talk shows.  I guess she has a new album out.  (Okay, I they are not albums anymore. )  Her style is it a little too over produced for my taste. I find the constant trilling of her voice annoying.  I think she has some pipes.  If she would just pull back and let just the quality of her voice drive her songs she would be much more appealing.

By contrast, Barbra Streisand was hitting the same circuit earlier this week.  Here is the epitome of a singer who is confident of her talent. I guess that is the difference between the two.   Of course, Barbra has a better voice, but she also knows how to use it.  She is so sure of herself that she does not need over amplification and to drag a choir out as back up.

Finally, little Taylor Swift in my head this morning.  Her style is cute, very cute, young and romantical.   I don't think she has the vocal quality of the other two but her songs are catchy.

It just goes to show there is a style and appeal for everyone and you have to give kudos to all the singers for finding their niche and holding to it.

Cold Weather

Distance: 12 miles
Song of the Run: Beat It - Michael Jackson

Weather: Chilly! 45 degrees

Run Notes:
Wow!  It was cold this morning.  I braved it and went with a short sleeve jersey, gloves, and capri-length running tights.  I never felt frozen but it did take several miles before I felt really warm enough to take off the gloves.  The strangest thing was the numbness of my right arm.  I mean really numb.  I couldn't move my fingers to take off the gloves on that hand.  My left arm was fine, thank goodness, otherwise I would have freaked out and imagining imminent heart failure.  Anyway, I needed to keep rubbing down the right arm in the attempt to get some warmth in it but it never completely happened.

I thought it interesting that Michael came into my head as the song of the run.  I guess I should explain the "Song of the Run."  I do not listen to music when I run; I am not plugged into an ipod.  One of my earlier blogs I talked about the disadvantages of doing so.  What happens with me is as I start my run I get a song stuck in my head and it helps me through the hardest (the hills) parts of my runs.  Sometimes they are songs I heard on the radio, or blasting out of my daughter's room in the morning, but every now and then it is a blast from the past.  Usually, it is just a phrase from a particular song but it the rythm keeps me on pace.

Today, although cold, was a great day for running.  The native foliage by the supply ponds have started changing colors and the swans were gliding along the shore.  So now it is time to get on with life; work and a parent's night to attend.

GI Blues

Distance: 4 miles
Song of the Run: White Wedding - Billy Idol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AofzLsvTsM0

Weather: Fair, sunny about 70 degrees

Run Notes:
I actually ran 12.8 miles on Saturday in preparation for the Hartford half marathon which takes place on October 10th.  I felt pretty good afterward with just a bit of stomach cramping.  Not sure what caused that so I took a look online and found out I am not alone when it comes to GI problems.

GI Blues
Runners experience more gastrointestinal problems than other athletes.  Most triatheletes and marathoners have experienced nausea, diarrhea, and stomach cramps at some point during their training and racing. So what causes this more indelicate consequence of running?  It has a lot to do with what you eat and drink and when you do it.

Nausea is usually caused by dehydration.  The stomach loses cool fluids at a more rapid rate than those a body temperature.  This is one of the reasons they say you should drink every 10 to 15 miuntes.  Simple sugars delay the depletion of fluids and this is where sports drinks come into play.  Those with simple sugars (less than 10% of glucose) and long chains of carbohydrates are absorb as easily as water and have excellent hydrating properties.

Cramping and diarrhea are thought to be caused by a couple of factors.  When you are running blood is diverted to the muscles from the GI tract, which can lead to the  inability of the body to absorb liquids.  Factor this in along with the  jostling of the GI tract during a run and you can have the perfect recipe for cramps and runner's trots.

Fiber rich and heavy fats before a workout or race can wreck havoc on your digestive system.  This is due to the fact that the fiber gets low in the GI tract where bacteria feeds on it creating gas and cramps.  Avoiding these foods or consuming them with enough time to minimize the amounts you have left in your digestive track is key.  If you are going to eat a big meal, give yourself at least three hours before running.  The night before a race eat 2 hours before bedtime and empty out your system the next morning.  Better yet go for a high carb beverage and reduce the intake of fiber and heavy foods the day before a race.

Running can trigger pre-existing conditions you may have such as lactose intorlerance and irritable bowel syndrome.  Staying away from diary the day before a race can also prove to be beneficial.

What it comes down to is everyone is different. Experiment with your diet the day before runs and races to see what works best for you.

West vs East Coast

Distance: 9 miles
Song of the Run: Buffalo Soldiers - Bob Marley (Bob Marley performs Buffalo Soldier)
Weather: a chilly 50 degrees

Run Notes:
Went for a longer run than I intended and now my legs are a bit sore.  The mornings have been rather chilly making it harder to get out of the house in the mornings.  Although it is hard to motivate myself I am always happy once I get going, and it was no exception today.

 West vs East Coast

"Get out and enjoy the last day of summer,"  the weather man said this morning.  Now summer is officially over I have to stop and wonder about the season that just passed.  It wasn't much of warm summer.  Lots of rain with only a few weeks of really hot temperatures. Does this mean a long cold winter?  I hope not.  Each year it gets harder to face the prospect of snow and ice.  By March I am going crazy to see leaves on trees.  It is my CA upbringing I guess.

I met a man from Idaho this evening who said you are either an east coaster or a west coaster.  It has to do with weather.  Don't get me wrong, I like the change of seasons.  I look forward to the fall foliage, the first snowfall, and daffodils in the spring.  It is the lag time to those daffodils that always kills me when the ground is brown and dead looking.  This is when the west coast calls to me the strongest.

In California there are seasonal changes but they are subtle.  The light gets golden in the fall and winter is damp and cold.  However, spring bursts forth a full month earlier full of blossoms.  The grass doesn't die out and you can garden year round.  You do not have to worry about slipping on ice and putting on ten layers of protective clothing just to walk the dog.

However, I have learned to appreciate some east coast nuances.  I can put my garden to bed in the fall and take a break for a few months and when it snows the air is crisp not damp.  So you see I go back and forth on my coastal allegiances.   If I could only find a way of combining the best of both coasts I would have it made.  Until then it may be time to find a warm sweater.

Sunday Runs

Distance: 11 miles
Song of the Run: I Wanna Be sedated - the Ramones
Weather: Beautiful

Run Notes:
After some stormy rainy days a beautiful day on the east coast. I haven't run in two days. Friday was my birthday and it was wet and raw. Being a fair weather runner I decided not to head outside. I figured my body deserved a days rest so I took a lazy day. Saturday I worked out and did not run - not sure why. So after two days off I hit the road and it hurt. I made it through but really had to push myself. I feel a bit sore.

Sunday Runs
Sundays are church days for some but for me it is a great time to get a long run in. There are few cars on the road and when the weather is great I feel I can go on forever. I guess my church is in the run. Everyone worships in different ways and mine is the peacefulness I get running even when it is hard. In addition, are the different people out there ready to greet you. To top it all off the swans were out. All of that is my church, so to speak. When I run a race then I am part of a congregation of people.

This has been a hard weekend for me. My birthday is on the 11th, a day that is not celebratory. This year in particular there seems to have been a bigger focus on the 9/11 rememberance than in the past few years. I tend to focus inward and shut down a bit. I think that is the reason I didn't run on Friday, when I really would have done better by getting out.

Last thought. Hurray for Kim Clijsters fo winning the US Open! A mom who has come back to win a major. It is possible. So why is everyone so amazed that a woman who decided to have a child returns to what she was doing before she gave birth?

Have a great week!

New Haven Road Race

Distance: 20k

Song of the Run: Gives You Hell - The All American Rejects

Weather: Very nice 67 degrees with no humidity

Run Notes:
Run went really well. I stayed to my nine minute pace. Actually started out slow and picked up speed around mile seven and eight. Was even able to kick it at the end. This run felt really good. I had done it before ten years ago and hated it. I think I was much more prepared this time. I did some great runs before the race and I am eating much healthier, it does make a difference.

Well, now that is done I am looking forward to the Hartford half marathon in October. As for the rest of the day I am heading to the beach with a good book. My husband has pork ribs in the slow cooker so dinner will be fantastic. I think it is a good way to spend Labor Day.

To all the runners of the day you all did great jobs. Thank you for the support and camaraderie!

September 4

Distance: 8 Miles
Song of the Run: Complicated - Avil Lavigne
Weather: 67 degrees and Bea-u-ti-ful!

Run Notes:
Last long run before the 20K on Monday and I feel completely ready for it. My toenail which got pretty nasty this week has healed up. Essentially I lost it which makes it feel much better.
Don't know why the Avril Lavigne song popped up in my head this morning, I haven't heard it in ages. I hope race day is as gorgeous as today. We are having just blissful weather. Cool mornings, warm days, and very cool nights.

That Fall Feeling
When that tropical storm came in a couple of weeks ago it flipped the switch into fall. It seems early to me but I am glad it is no longer hot and unbearably humid. The quality of light is even beginning to change which really puts me into a fall mood. I love fall, it is my favorite season. When people say fall on the east coast is incredible, they aren't kidding! I didn't believe it until my first autumn and then it was WOW!
On the west coast the seasons are not as drastic, a few pretty leaves but here it is completely different story.

The spectacular show of leaves is mother nature's version of fire works. Reds, yellows, organges, falling from the trees - no wonder people make leaf peeping a vacation event. This year should be a good one since there was sooo much rain.

In addition to leaf peeping, the activities associated with the season make it special. I am looking forward to apple picking, pumpkin carving, and long fall hikes. I'm ready to start putting my garden into autumn mode. I need to get some mums, cabbage, and kale; start moving perennials around, doing some trimming for the eventual winter season.

And let's not forget about the food. Pies, apple cider, trick or treats, and the big turkey feast. I am hungry just thinking about it.

So even though the beach days are coming to an end, I am looking forward to the beautiful season ahead, and trying not to think about the cold of winter lurking around the corner.

September 2

Distance: 8 miles
Song of the Run: The Freshmen - The Verve Pipe
Weather: 68 degrees, beautiful

Run Notes:
The beautiful weather continues, aren't we lucky? I was feeling a little under the weather so I did not run yesterday. I did lift weights and that felt really good.

The swans were out today. As soon as the hot humid weather lifted the waterfowl reappeared on the supply ponds. Seems they are smarter than the humans, especially this one who was out running around on hot days. The swans still have their three signets. The youngsters are still grey in color but large. Seeing them was the highlight of my run.

Slow Down People!
If the highlight of the run was the swans gliding gracefully on the water, the low point was the crazy fast pace of the traffic this morning. What was going on this morning?

Not only did the traffic seem to be moving at a rapid pace it was also moving erratically. This was the first time I felt truly scared to be running in the road. One car swerved so far in my direction I jumped into the bushes.

I can only surmise the onset of school has added to the rush of the morning. I can only imagine parents are running behind to get the kids to school and then to work. Hopefully, once they get back into the groove things will settle down.

However, you would think drivers would realized that with the start of school comes more kids on the streets. So they should SLOW DOWN!!! Until that happens my runs will be cautious ones.

August 31st

Distance: 3.5 miles
Song of the Run: Rape Me - Nirvana
Weather: 64 degrees

Run Notes:
We are experiencing some great weather in the Northeast. It was actually a little chilly on my run this morning, something I haven't felt in a long time. A lite run today, since yesterday was a long one. I am focusing on next Monday's 20k.

School is Back!
My daughter went back to school today. She is now a junior in high school. I know she is ready for it but I don't think I am.

Unlike most kids, my daughter has been looking forward to the beginning of the new school year. She is the only kid I know who gets excited when the stores start putting out supplies in July. We usually have books, notebooks, pens, etc. before August. When I asked her if she had put her things together for this morning, she told me she had done it 2 weeks ago. Although I know this about her I still shake my head.

So she was ready to leave bright and early this a.m., however, she had to endure the first day of school picture taking ritual. I have been doing this every year and even though I now get grief I have a great retrospective of her school years. I know the first day of college I won't be there but I'll be able to look back at where we've been.

August 30

Distance: 11.5 miles
Song of the Run: Mr. Brightside - The Killers
Weather: Overcast, 66 degrees

Run Notes:
I hadn't meant to run so far but yesterday turned out to be a slug day. I didn't run yesterday. It was cold and I was just too tired. So I stayed in and watched movies with my family and pigged out on pizza. So this morning I figured I had carbo loaded up and just went for it. Besides, the weather was cool and I the run was going well, so, I kept running. Since I did nothing yesterday, I needed to lift weights this morning. I feel so studly.

August 28th

Distance: 8 miles Song of the Run: Wake Me Up When September Ends - Green Day Weather: A cool 66 degrees. Rain. Tropical storm Danny offshore.

Run Notes:
A cool run. The exact path of tropical storm Danny is not known, so I went for a semi long run this morning. Glad I went when I did, it started raining as I came up to my house. I got my husband out for a run with me. Well sort of a run. I pushed him to do three miles so we parted at the top of the hill. I hope it didn't kill him. He was off to work by the time I came back from my run.

Making the Time
My husband says the problem with being in shape is that is takes up a lot of time. Is this the reason America is so overweight? I understand how much time it takes to exercise. I put in at least an hour to two hours everyday running or lifting weights. I only have breakfast with my family one day a week. The one day I take off. Granted it works out for all of us. My husband doesn't talk much in the morning and my daughter is downright surly. So in someways it is to my advantage not to be around in the a.m. At first it was hard to get out of the house and not sit at the table reading the paper, but we adjusted. In the long run, I realized I wasn't missing much and was much happier out doing something that makes me feel good.

So for everyone that thinks they do not have the time to exercise, I say miss an episode of some stupid sitcom and go do something with your body! It is not neccessary to put in two hours. You can make a change with just a half an hour a day. It is truly not that difficult and will make all the difference in the world.

August 25

Distance: 11.4 miles
Song of the Run: I'm Yours - Jason Mraz
Weather: Beautiful 73 degrees

Run Notes:
After the last two runs in which I was sucking wind, I finally had a wonderful run. Very proud of the distance and that I am still feeling strong afterwards. My only regret is that I veered from my original route at the last minute and by doing so bypassed the place to stop for water earlier in the run. Still it worked out.

The Morning Run
I have always felt morning runners were more relaxed and friendly. It's one of the reasons I am willing to get up so early and get out there. I get a lot of "hellos" in the a.m. and not just from runners. Bikers, gardeners, and walkers will also give you a greeting. The only major change in the 30 years I have been running are those who have earbuds on and so tuned into whatever they are listening to that they tend to not notice anyone. It's sad that they are missing out on the human interaction element of the run.

Part of running for me is the opportunity to see the neighborhoods and the people that live in them. I notice the changes in the houses and yards. I often see the same people day after day and it makes me feel connected somehow. You become part of the community of the morning.

The highlight of today's run was a man in an Alfa Romeo Spider. Convertible and tomato red. What a hot car! As I ran passed I called out to him, "Fantastic car!" He smiled and said thank you, then revved it a couple of times. It gave me a good laugh! These chance meetings are just as important a link to the life of the neighborhood.

Everyday I see something new. Landscaping, wildlife, construction, but most of all it is the people. They are running, walking the dog, riding to work, gardening, or maybe just picking up the newspaper. They keep me going with a simple wave, a smile, or hello. So for those of you immersed in your ipods let me just tell you; you have no idea what you are missing.

August 24

Distance: 5 miles
Song of the Run: 21 Guns - Green Day
Weather: 75 degrees, No Humidity!!!!!!

Run Notes:
Short run today which is sad since it is beautiful outside today. This is the first day in almost two weeks it has not been hot, humid, and nasty. I ran eight miles on Saturday and felt just awful. I think it was the humidity. So glad we are looking at a stretch of good weather.

I am feeling a bit under the weather today so did a very limited run. Not sure what is going on, I only hope it passes quickly.

August 21

Distance: 5 miles
Song of the Run: Human - The Killers
Weather: Opressively humid

Run Notes:
Wow! I stepped out of the house this morning into a wall of humidity. Needless to say I was unable to put in the miles I had intended. I hope the morning of the race is not like this. I don't think I can do 20K when the dew point is 70. The highlight of the run was the deer crossing the road right in front of me. It was a doe and she was alone. I do not run in the country, so it was an unusual sight.

The weather was not the only reason I didn't run so far. My daughter came home late last night from a party and I stayed up to make sure she got in okay. Then we talked until 2:30A. She will be a junior this year and I know I only have a couple of years left before she is here at all. She comes in all wide awake and tells me about her evening. It's wonderful! I hear about her date, what he said, what they did and so on. I ask you, how many moms get that opportunity?! I feel fortunate that she feels comfortable enough to share these things with me. Yes, it does make it hard to get up early to beat the heat for a long run, and I am tired the next day, but I will take the late night talks anytime.

August 20

Distance: Intervals, 3 miles LOL
Song of the Run: Lips of an Angel - Hinder

Run Notes:
The intention, schedule, was to run intervals this morning. Hah! The old body was just too tired this morning. I got up, put on my running stuff and then procrastinated getting out of the house..I did not want to run. I finally got going but by then it was too hot. I did a couple of feeble intervals before giving up and settle for an easy three miles.

Sometimes you should just listen to your body.

August 19th

Distance: 8 miles
Song of the Run: Dirty Little Secret - All-American Rejects

Run Notes:
Coming back from a long run and putting in eight miles makes me feel pretty damn good. Got a late start which was unfortunate since it is another 90 degree day.

Running Shoes
I got a new pair of running shoes yesterday and it makes me happy. I have been running in Asics Gel-Kayanos for years and other than the usual toenail problems they have been good to me. I have been running in them so long I thought that it might be time to try a different shoe. Little did I know what I had let myself in for.

I began to research running shoes and was overwhelmed. Fist you must determine your foot type. Do you have a high, normal, or low arch? What is your gait? Are you a pronator, supinator, or neutral? Then there is the question of what type of runner are you. Trails? Racing? Are you looking for shoe with stability, cushioning or responsive one?

So many shoes, so many questions! My head was beginning to swim. How did I arrive at wearing Kayanos? I guess I must of answered all of these questions at one time.

I went to a couple of local running stores and mentioned that I was thinking of changing shoes after years of running in a certain pair. At each store the salespeople there looked at me like I was crazy. Why would I change after all these years?
I thought I might find something better and cheaper. Every person told me to stay with the same shoe. Well, that would be easier than trying on 15 different shoes.

In the end I had the answers to all of those questions. So tomorrow I will put my new Kayanos on and start breaking them in for the road race.

August 17th

Distance: 10.5 miles
Song of the Run: No One Mourns the Wicked

Run Notes:
Put in a long run to get ready for the upcoming 20K. It went well, however I am a little worried about blisters under my toenails. I have the runner's nail. I worry about it with the upcoming long run.

Runner's Feet
The ugly truth is that most runners have nasty looking feet. They suffer from wonderful things like toenail fungus, black toenails, and runner's nail. In addition to that the toes and heels are calloused. During the winter I do not mind it so much since my feet are covered, but come summer I want to wear sandals and look girlie. It's hard to do when you have toenails that are falling off.

I keep my nails short. I cut the nail a bit rounded and as short as possible without risking an ingrown toenail. When I do get an infection or blister back behind the nail, I soak the foot in warm water and a disinfectant such as betadine. Then I disinfect a needle and poke the blistered infected area behind the nail to relieve the pressure from the serus fluid. Sometimes I have to do this for a couple of days before it goes away. Continue soaking the area and eventually you can pull off the nail. Sounds awfully painful but by the time you get to this point it doesn't feel so bad.

I cover the now unprotected toe when running. It just doesn't look so great in sandals. I have also read that by removing the nail, which is no longer attached, it shortens the amount of time for a new one to grow back. I have to confess in all honesty that during the summer I tend to try to keep the nail by filing them thin. Then I cover them with a dark nail polish.

Even if I can camoflage my nails, I have to work hard on the rest of my calloused feet. I try to be good by giving myself a pedicure each week. I soak them in a nice epsom salt bath and gently pumice them. The hard part is not pumicing them too far, you need some callous to protect them.

It's a lot of work keeping my feet in shape and they don't always look very pretty. However, for all the work they do during my runs I think it's worth it.

August 15

Distance: 3 miles
Song of the Run: "That's What You Get for Waking Up in Vegas" - Katy Perry

Run Notes:
Short run today after the long eight of yesterday. Besides, today is a weight workout day as well. The legs felt tired but made it up the long hill. Very hot today. Some days it is harder to push yourself out onto the road and today was one of them. However, once I get out and start running it always feels worth it.

Who is Responsible for Your Health?
I have challenged the family to running the 5K race on Labor Day. While my husband is enthusiastic my 16-year old is not entirely happy. I did kick her out of the house for a mile run this morning. We'll see how far we get on this subject.

My motivation for getting them moving is based on health. That and the article in the NY Times this morning about fat tax and whether obese people should pay more for health insurance. I'm sure a lot of people would think just the idea of such a thing as unfair. However, when you think about it the high cost of obesity, and diabetes which is often associated with it, it makes sense. Unless people are willing to change behavior we can talk about health reform all we want but it will not mean the country will get healthier.

So who is responsible for getting America healthier? The proposal in the article suggested it is indeed up to the government. It took the responsibility on in its war against smoking, so why have they not waged a campaign against obesity? And if they did do you think it would work? Isn't obesity considered an epidemic? Then perhaps the government should step in with higher taxes on junk food and limiting the types of food served in schools, thereby changing people's habits which contribute to the problem.

All of this brings me back to my family with its history of heart disease and diabetes. I am pushing them into another pattern of behavior which I hope will result in having them stick around a little longer.

August 14th

Distance: 8 miles
Song of the run: "Take it Easy" The Eagles

Running Notes:
I was in California the past week with no access to a computer. While visiting my mother I made sure to run at least 5 miles everyday. This posed a bit of a problem since the city she lives in has seen better days and finding a route to get the distance I needed was a bit of a problem. The best moment was running in on a sketchy street and going by a couple of guys wearing matching black bandanas, chains on their pockets and heavily tatooed. They gave me a cheery "good morning," I nodded to them and picked up the pace. I realized later they were the only people who greeted me during my run.'

It was good to get back to my neighborhood and out for a long run this morning. I decided to do the 20k New Haven road race on Labor Day. I'll have to get in a couple of 10 milers in the next two weeks. I have run this race before. It is relatively a flat, fast race. My only objection to it is that it takes you through some of the ugliest parts of New Haven. I figured it would be a good prep for the half marathon I want to do in the fall.

Fall? Hmmm, the summer is almost over. Where did it go?

July 31

Distance: 7 miles
Song of the run: There's Your Trouble - Dixie Chicks
Wildlife: Geese in the mist rising off the supply ponds amongst water lilies.

Run notes:
A rainy day here in the northeast. Usually I wimp out on these types of days but I figured there's wasn't much of a difference being soaked due to sweat or rain. Originally I was only going to run 5 miles as I was supposed to go mountain bike riding this afternoon with my husband. However, after the rain started coming down even harder I realized that was not going to happen so I decided on six miles. Then it cleared and I figured seven was a good number.

Not sure why The Chicks came to mind today. I guess they were still in my head from the workout of yesterday.

HOW HIP ARE WE?
I was thinking about a conversation I had with my daughter about her date last night. She let me know quite clearly that she thought my concepts about what is and is not acceptable pretty archaic. In some ways I was offended, hell, I'm not that old. In other ways I was amused. I felt I had lived on the cutting edge and experienced the Vietnam war, the Summer of Love, and Woodstock. I came from the era of ultimate rebelliousness, so my ideas should seem hip. I think it just shows that no matter who we thought were, or how cool we were growing up, it doesn't matter.

The next generation is so involved in themselves, their space of time is the only thing that is pertinent.
I am sure my daughter thinks how she lives her life and the things her friends experience are much more exciting than anything anyone has ever done in the past. I know, I felt the same way at that age. Yet, for all of that she listens much of the same music as her father and dresses ala Nirvana, which is a good 10-15 years old. So how much do we evolve?

I thought my parents didn't get any of it because they were too old to have ever been with it. I vowed never to get like them and yet here I am. Or not. I still think I am cooler than my parents. You always think you know more than your parents. The aspect of that just changes as you get older. I am sure my daughter looks at me that way. So in many ways the both of us, although we have opposing positions, are in the same place. We are still growing up.

How to Run in the Heat at Runner's World

How to Run in the Heat at Runner's World

Shared via AddThis

July 29

Distance: 8.5 miles
Song of the run: Sorry, none for today.

Run Notes:
This was a hard run today because of the weather. At 6:30A it was already a hot and sweaty run. Maybe I would break down and turn the A/C on when I got back home.

I began to think I would sweat off half my body weight as I went along flicking perspiration off my face. Then at the four mile mark I reached up and my face felt suddenly dry and flushed. I tried to remember the symptoms for dehydration and heatstroke. Okay, maybe I was getting melodramatic, but I had just read an article in Runner's World which talked about just this kind of scenario and I tend to worry about these things.

I slowed my pace and began to monitor my body a bit more. When I got to the turn off where I could head home or go for the longer run, I decided I'd be okay as long as I kept a slow steady pace and could keep bringing spit up into my mouth. (okay not a pleasant image but something I thought important at the time.) At the end of a hill on mile six, I felt like I was going to hit the wall. I walked for about a minute and thought about a park that was coming up in .5 miles where I could get a drink and cool off. Although I normally never drink from fountains ( I am an admitted germ-a-phobe), the water from that fountain tasted phenomenal. I cooled myself off and headed down the hill for home.

I know I was not really dehydrated but I think it was important that I listened to my body. Running on hot days can really take it out of you and there is the potential for overheating yourself to the point of dehydration and heatstroke. Now that I've cooled down and hydrated myself I've realized it's not so bad out there today. I think the A/C can stay in the off position.

P.S.
Don't forget to check out the article and pointers about running in the heat from Runner's World.

July 28

Distance: 3 Miles
Song of the run: Stand - R.E.M.

Run Notes:
Short run since it is a weight lifting day. The roads are quiet and empty early in the morning. The cool air is refreshing after a hot night. Unfortunately it doesn't last long. By the first mile it had gotten hot and sticky and the cars began their journeys to work.

Summer morning run
Sluggish, sweaty, heavy legs
Lily pond, geese...done!

The Art of Running in the Road
A friend and I were having lunch when she spotted a runner out on the street. She knows I run, so she looked at me and asked "Why do people do that?" I explained that running on asphalt is easier on the feet than concrete since it offers a softer surface. It also allows better foot control and a more even terrain. She said she had always just thought the runners were out on the road because they were crazy. Well, maybe we are a little crazy but there is a real zen to running on the streets and living to tell the tale.

Run Facing Oncoming Traffic
Most drivers don't realize the more they look at you as you are coming their way the more their car veers towards you. Usually, they come to at the last moment and jerk the car the other direction but you can't always depend on that. The last time I ran in the same direction of traffic, a car went by so close I could have reached in and changed the radio station as their side view mirror brushed my jersey. Since then I've made it a practise to run facing traffic so I can jump out of the way if the car gets so close I can see the whites of their eyes.

Always Have an Exit Strategy
Surprisingly most drivers hate to move over for runners. They will move widely out of the way for abandoned cars, cats, and squirrels but for some reason they do not want to yield the road to a human being. Okay, an abandoned car is an immovable object; cats and squirrels are cute, but you'd think as a fellow homosapien they'd give you a bit more leeway. Elderly drivers, the ones who drive 20 mph at all times but never stop at signs or lights, are the most reluctant to move around a runner. School buses are the the second biggest villains in this scenario. They are great at avoiding small children but that instinct in those drivers does not seem to transfer over to adults. I understand when there is traffic in both lanes but when there is not another car in sight
you would think they could go around you. In all fairness, there are many who will give you a wide arc and you should appreciate their consideration of your well being, but you learn to never assume it. Hence, it pays to know the route you run, stay as far over as you can and be willing to dive over guard rails if need be to avoid being hit.

Have A Thick Skin
Morning is my favorite time of day to run. During the summer you can avoid the heat and during the school year the buses. Morning is also the time when wildlife is most active. I have seen geese, deer, wild turkeys, turtles, and hedgehogs on my runs. These sightings make it worthwhile to haul my ass out of bed in the wee hours of the morn. One day, when the sky was a beautiful aqua and the air was cool, I was at the end of great eight miler going along making up a poem in my head as I passed the supply ponds. I had just seen the first signets of the season and life seemed wonderful. There were some cars backed up at the street light and as I passed one of them a man yelled "Bitch!" Well the poem immediately evaporated from my head and was replace by shock and then a nasty comeback. He was mad because he had to slow down a bit while I passed even though he had plenty of room to go by. This event led me to discern the following: most people seem to be angry during their early commutes. Maybe they are not morning people or they are running late but I've had people yell, honk, flip me off, and throw things at me. You learn to take into account the source of these actions and take it in stride (pun intended). If you take it too personally it will ruin your run.

You are sharing the road which can be a dangerous place for runners and drivers.
You need to be aware at all times of the traffic and be just as courteous to drivers as you want them to be to you. Don't assume they see you, give them the right of way, and don't be rude. The streets may seem a harsh world. However it's one with a softer and more even terrain for my feet. I may be bit crazy for running in the road but it is my bit of daily enlightenment. I'll be out there again tomorrow.

July 27

Since this is the first posting I guess I should impart some info about why this blog is appearing. I have been running most of my life. In 1999 I ran a marathon and then due to what seemed to be a series of injuries I have not seriously run since 2001. The final downfall to running was breaking my ankle. Last year I finally started running again and realized it is the time whan I do my best thinking while dodging cars on the road. So the blog seemed the next step.

This is not going to be a blog solely devoted to running. I will note the mileage and any interesting things that may occur during a run but will mainly concentrate on the thoughts that come to mind during the run.

I hope you enjoy it!

Song of the day: I Kissed a Girl - Katy Perry
Distance: 7 miles
